Did You Know?…
Almost 60% of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes without smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
The death rate per 1,000 reported home fires was more than twice as high in homes that did not have any working smoke alarms (12.3 deaths per 1,000 fires), either because no smoke alarm was present or an alarm was present but did not operate), as it was in homes with working smoke alarms (5.7 per 1,000 fires).
In fires in which the smoke alarms were present but did not operate 43% of the smoke alarms had missing or disconnected batteries.
Dead batteries cause 25% of the smoke alarm failures.
For older homes, battery-only smoke alarms are the simplest to install. For homes under construction, smoke alarms are typically connected to the household wiring (hard-wired).  Smoke alarms connected to household wiring with battery back-up will provide protection even during power outages. Consider upgrading smoke alarms to hard-wired with battery back-up during a renovation or remodeling project.

Your Safety
Smoke detectors/carbon detectors are an important part of safety in a home, as these fire/co protection devices will automatically detect and warn you of the presence of smoke and carbon and can save your life.
Almost half of all home fires, however, occur in homes without working smoke alarms. Regardless of the type of alarm you have, it is important that you maintain it properly. Having a smoke alarm that doesn’t work can be a fatal mistake. Every day, at least seven people die in house fires in the US.

Fast & Effective
Having smoke/co detectors placed in various locations around your home allows for fast and effective detection. The siren will warn you, day or night, that there is a potential fire or high carbon monoxide levels, allowing you to quickly check the nature of the problem and hopefully prevent any damage. When placed in the right location, your detector can also help firefighters quickly locate the fire in the home, allowing them to better focus their efforts.

The alarm’s battery should be replaced twice a year. When the batteries are low, the detector will emit a short beeping sound every few minutes. With Always Alert, your detector is hard-wired into the wall, but also provides a battery backup that is easy for you to access and change.

Every Year
Every year in the United States, over 2,600 people lose their lives in residential fires along with nearly 500 deaths from CO poisoning (along with almost 50,000 hospitalizations). In a fire, smoke and deadly gases tend to spread farther and faster than heat. That’s one reason why most fire victims die from inhalation of smoke and toxic gases, not from burns.

A majority of fatal fires happen when families are asleep because occupants are unaware of the fire until there is not adequate time to escape. A smoke alarm stands guard around the clock, and when it first senses smoke, it sounds a shrill alarm. This often allows a family the precious, but limited time needed to escape. About 65% of home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

Properly installed and maintained smoke alarms are considered to be one of the best and least expensive means of providing an early warning of a potentially deadly fire and reduces the risk of dying from a fire in your home by nearly 50%.

About Always Alert

I have worked for more than 40 years in the maintenance field. I have served many apartments and condominium properties that housed singles, families, seniors, and disabled people, all of which had smoke alarms/co detectors on the ceilings, some mounted 8’ or higher.

Twice a year my staff and I would have to stop all activities and repairs to replace smoke alarm/co detector batteries in every unit at every property. Every member of my team had to carry 2 large pouches for old and new batteries and a ladder to reach the alarm. We then had to go door to door, wait for the resident to answer then proceed with the task at hand while trying not to rush and end up injured by falling/slipping off the ladder. This job is as important as it is tedious and time-consuming. Time is money and time spent doing this mundane task is time that other important tasks are not getting done. I don’t even want to mention all the middle-of-the-night service calls for a chirping alarm.

One evening I was dismantling a smoke alarm and added approximately 20 feet of wire to the battery terminal to test the alarm. With that simple task, Always Alert was born.

With Always Alert the battery maintenance problems go away. Always Alert makes it easier for the residents and homeowners to replace their own smoke alarm/co detector batteries twice a year or whenever it is needed. The battery compartment is located in the adjacent wall and would be no higher than a light switch. Each Always Alert box is equipped with a battery light, test button, and lock. The battery compartments take up no more room than a standard light switch or plug outlet.

The wire and battery compartment is very easy for an electrician to install with minimal wall repair, whether you are using a standard battery-operated or hardwire with battery back-up smoke alarm/co detector. The best time to install Always Alert would be during a remodel or new construction, but it is relatively easy to install anytime.

I find it hard to believe that it took someone so long to think of a safer, better way to replace the batteries in smoke alarms/co detectors.
